PCR kit validated for Enterobacteriaceae in infant formula and cereals

24 Oct, 2025

MicroVal has certified the iQ-Check™ Enterobacteriaceae Kit from Bio-Rad Laboratories for reliable detection of Enterobacteriaceae in infant formula, cereals (with and without probiotics), and related ingredients.

Enterobacteriaceae are key hygiene indicators used to assess the effectiveness of manufacturing processes designed to eliminate or control bacterial contamination. The family includes important foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella, Cronobacter, and pathogenic E. coli.

The validation, performed according to ISO 16140-2:2016 and MicroVal technical guidance, confirmed that the iQ-Check Enterobacteriaceae method delivers performance equivalent to internationally recognised reference methods. Testing demonstrated excellent concordance with ISO 21528-1, verifying the kit’s accuracy for use in samples up to 375 g.

Developed for use in industrial microbiology laboratories, the iQ-Check Enterobacteriaceae Kit offers a complete real-time PCR solution for monitoring hygiene and process control. It allows rapid and dependable detection of Enterobacteriaceae, helping manufacturers maintain consistent quality and regulatory compliance.

The study also validated Bio-Rad’s iQ-Check Free DNA Removal Solution as part of the workflow, ensuring accurate results by removing DNA from non-viable cells prior to PCR analysis.

Franck Edouard, Senior Marketing Director for Bio-Rad’s Food Science Division, commented: “Infant formula and related products demand the highest standards of microbiological control. This certification underlines the robustness and versatility of our iQ-Check portfolio in supporting food safety assurance.”

The iQ-Check Enterobacteriaceae Kit complements Bio-Rad’s iQ-Check Salmonella spp. and iQ-Check Cronobacter Solution, providing a comprehensive suite of PCR-based food safety tests. MicroVal certificate number 2018LR80 is available on the MicroVal website. The kit also holds AOAC PTM validation (certificate 082003) for powdered infant formula and environmental samples.
