From someone’s kitchen to your lab

BioBased consumables use renewable, second-generation feedstocks, including used cooking oil and other waste or residue streams from the food industry. In other words, material that has already served one purpose is given a second life in the laboratory.

The feedstock is broken down to the molecular level and recombined into long chains of polypropylene. This BioBased polypropylene is then used in the trusted manufacturing process to produce BioBased tubes, pipette tips, PCR plates and deepwell plates. The resulting consumables match their fossil-based counterparts in look, feel and performance. The only difference is the origin of the raw material.

Using the ISCC PLUS® mass-balance approach, certified renewable feedstocks are accounted for across the supply chain and their equivalent share is attributed to specified products for a transparent insight into their composition. Eppendorf BioBased consumables are made from upwards of 86% bio-sourced polymers depending on the product type.

Eppendorf requests ACT Environmental Impact Factor Label from My Green Lab for many of its products and devices. It helps you to make clearer comparisons between products by sharing data on e.g. renewable energy used during manufacturing, alongside recycled content.

Eppendorf also conducts its own assessments to ensure that every BioBased product makes a measurable difference. For example, Eppendorf Safe-Lock Tubes® BioBased have a 38% lower cradle-to-grave carbon footprint than comparable fossil-sourced tubes.
