Modern laboratory planning: A holistic approach in practice

19 Aug, 2025

Designing a laboratory today goes far beyond choosing furniture and arranging equipment. Modern planning must reconcile the expectations of architects, scientists, safety officers, and sustainability experts. Laboratories are not just workplaces - they form the foundation for precise research, efficient workflows, and employee well-being.

User-centred planning for modern labs

Successful laboratory design starts with the people who use the space every day. Flexible layouts, ergonomic workstations, and intuitive safety features ensure that scientists can focus on what matters most: research and innovation.

At Köttermann, projects begin with a thorough analysis of customer requirements. From technical needs to collaboration and ergonomics, future users are directly involved in the planning phase. This approach ensures laboratories that are not only functional, but also safe and adaptable. Flexibility is key: spaces and equipment must evolve with changing demands, while energy efficiency and durable materials secure long-term value.

Sustainability and innovation in practice

A recent project for Repha, a German manufacturer of biological medicines, illustrates how this holistic approach translates into practice. Growing demand during the pandemic made new laboratory facilities essential. Together with architects and Repha employees, Köttermann and its partner HLL Landgraf Laborsysteme developed a concept that combined sustainability, innovative technology, and modern design.

The new building relies on renewable energy sources, while an advanced air management system integrates Köttermann fume hoods into the overall ventilation and climate-control concept. The fume hoods not only protect staff during critical procedures but also contribute to maintaining a healthy indoor environment.

Design and ergonomics

Glass partitions balance concentration with transparency, and ergonomic workstations support efficient workflows. The Köttermann steel laboratory furniture in Arctic White, combined with Baltic Blue surfaces, creates a clean, spacious design. Specialised zones, such as an HPLC laboratory and weighing room, are separated yet remain visually connected, highlighting the importance of both safety and collaboration.

The result: laboratory facilities that align with Repha’s values of sustainability and innovation while providing employees with a safe and inspiring workplace. For Köttermann, the project reflects a guiding principle of modern laboratory design – integrating functionality, sustainability, and aesthetics into a coherent whole.
