Discover the Future of Science: Join the Reunion at Pittcon 2023

Feb 08 2023

After two years of virtual connectivity, the 74th Pittcon returns in a face-to-face format from 18-22 March 2023. Taking place at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Philadelphia, the event will provide visitors with the opportunity to collaborate in person, experience the latest advances in analytical research, scientific instrumentation and technology, and explore solutions to their research challenges.

Pittcon is a thriving, international conference and trade show that focuses on the field of laboratory science. It provides a showcase for scientific innovations on laboratory equipment, technology and supplies. In addition, it serves as an educational platform and offers numerous opportunities for growth in the sciences. The conference offers over 1000 technical and networking sessions, while the exposition features approximately 500 exhibiting companies from all corners of the globe.

“We are beyond elated to welcome the world of laboratory science back to Pittcon,” said Jonell Kerkhoff, Pittcon President. “Moreover, this is our first live and in-person Pittcon in two years and we are returning to Philadelphia, a city that has historically provided us with a great deal of attendee and exhibitor engagement.”

2023 Wallace H. Coulter Lecture

Joanna Aizenberg will deliver the 2023 Wallace H. Coulter Lecture. Joanna Aizenberg received the B.S. degree in Chemistry from Moscow State University, and the PhD degree in Structural Biology from the Weizmann Institute of Science. After spending nearly a decade at Bell Labs, Joanna joined Harvard University, where she is the Amy Smith Berylson Professor of Materials Science and Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology.

Her Lecture, ‘Venturing Into Analytical Chemistry Using Photonic Crystals’ will take place during Pittcon 2023 on Sunday 19 March at 5:00pm.

This talk will showcase a remarkable co-assembly method for creating large, highly organised porous photonic crystals. These opal films exhibit an eye-catching coloration that results from a combination of iridescence and plasmonic effects. Moreover, their composition and optical properties can be altered by selectively functionalising the doped opals, resulting in a locally tunable threshold wettability. This allows for changes in the liquid-specific wetting behaviour and macroscopic colour shifts. These properties are being harnessed for various practical applications, such as the creation of low-cost colorimetric indicators for medical diagnosis, oil classification, encryption, and monitoring of tampering or material degradation. Finally, this presentation will delve into the possibilities of using these techniques to create novel, machine learning-powered artificial noses that use biomimetic ‘sniffing’ methods.

James L. Waters Symposium

The 2023 topic of the James L. Waters Symposium is ‘History and Development of SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry)’. Leading experts will discuss the progression, practical implementation, and latest innovations in instrumentation and its practical applications.

The outstanding panel of speakers who will be presenting at the Pittcon 2023 Waters Symposium includes: Nicholas Winograd, Penn State University; Ron Heeren, Maastricht University; Sean Bendall, Stanford University; Hua Tien, University of Pittsburgh; Jonathan Sweedler, University of Illinois.

This session will take place during Pittcon on Tuesday 21 March at 1:30 pm.

Short Courses 2023

The 2023 Short Courses will take place from Saturday 18 – Wednesday 22 March. With over 60 options to choose from and catering to different skill levels - beginner, intermediate, and advanced - these courses can last anywhere from half a day to one full day. They cover a diverse range of analytical topics including biomedical engineering, environmental analysis, mass spectrometry, microscopy, chromatography, pharmaceutical sciences, and more. Additionally, there are courses available on general lab functions such as industrial hygiene and safety, data management and data analysis, regulatory compliance and validation.

Conferee networking sessions

The 90-minute conferee networking sessions offer a chance for full attendee registrations to connect with others who share similar interests in a relaxed atmosphere, at no additional cost. Structured problem-solving in a face-to-face setting is another advantage of attending these sessions. The goal of increasing awareness about a specific topic or issue can be achieved through this platform, and attending this event provides an opportunity to find solutions to a problem or come up with new ideas.

The networking sessions encompass a wide range of subjects including food science, speciality analysis, cannabis and hemp, environmental science, water quality, materials science, biomedical, laboratory information/data analysis, pharmaceutical science, and more.
