Sony DADC BioSciences has received a European Life Science Award for its work on developing smart polymer consumables.

The firm, named Best New Company 2012 at the recent annual awards ceremony in Hamburg develops and manufactures smart consumables; late last year it partnered with Anagnostics Bioanalysis to work on the production and development of hybcells, a core part of multiplex assay and diagnostics technology.

The company operates production sites, distribution hubs and service facilities in Japan, the US and across Europe, running 19 sites in total.

Marketing manager at Sony DADC Dr Manfred Koranda said the award is recognition of the firm's "drive" in this area.

"We entered the life sciences market with the full commitment of our resources," he remarked, adding Sony DADC's core business remains manufacturing CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs.
