Professor Doreen Cantrell, Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at the University of Dundee’s School of Life Sciences, has been appointed as one of two new trustees of Cancer Research UK one of the world’s biggest cancer charities.

Professor Cantrell has enjoyed a long association with Cancer Research UK, previously leading an immunology research group at the charity’s Research Institute. She has published over 50 research papers and she has a particular interest in the molecules that control white blood cell function. In 2014, she received a CBE for services to Life Sciences. She has also chaired the Biological Sciences sub-panel for the UK Research Excellence Framework.

Professor Cantrell said, “I’m delighted to be joining Cancer Research UK’s Council of Trustees. Having worked with the charity in different capacities over the years, I’ve seen first-hand the significance and impact of its work.

“It is a privilege to be joining such a knowledgeable group of people and I look forward to working with them and playing my part in helping to achieve the charity’s long-term vision to bring about a world where everybody can lead longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.”

Professor Gerard Evan, of King’s College, London, was also announced a trustee of the charity.

Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Chair of Cancer Research UK, said, “It is great to welcome Doreen and Gerard to our Council of Trustees and I look forward to working with them. Both have achieved so much over the course of their illustrious careers and their extensive expertise will be crucial in helping shape the charity’s strategic direction over the coming years.”
