Networked 2D-coded tube readers streamline cryogenic workflows

06 Jan, 2026

Azenta Life Sciences has introduced Mirage Connect and Cube Connect, a new generation of camera-based 2D-coded tube readers designed to support networked laboratories and cryogenic sample workflows.

Developed within the Ziath portfolio, the two systems are built for laboratories handling frozen samples and operating increasingly automated, connected environments. Both readers feature passive cryoprotection to help reduce condensation when reading frozen tubes, limiting sample exposure to ambient conditions and supporting sample integrity during high-throughput processing.

The Mirage Connect reader has been engineered with a compact, low-profile design that makes it well suited for robotic platforms and space-constrained workstations. It is the first camera-based tube reader to offer fully integrated networking via an RJ45 connection, eliminating the need for a separate DC power supply. An upgraded 16-megapixel camera, integrated Cyclops barcode activation and support for HTTP(S) REST APIs enable straightforward integration into automated workflows and laboratory informatics systems. Standard acoustic templates and mobile app control further simplify day-to-day operation.

Cube Connect is designed for laboratories working with larger-format racks, including 14×14, 81-position and 100-position cryo boxes. The reader features a more compact footprint than previous models, housed in a durable metal enclosure, and incorporates two 12-megapixel cameras for reliable rack reading. Flexible connectivity via USB-C or RJ45 removes the need for dedicated power adapters, while passive cryoprotection supports efficient reading of frozen samples in both standalone and networked lab environments.

Both readers operate using DataPaq™ DP5 V2.0 software, which simplifies setup and supports a broad range of rack formats, including 24-, 48-, 96- and high-density configurations. REST API compatibility and mobile app connectivity enable integration with automated systems and custom laboratory software platforms.

To mark the launch, Azenta Life Sciences is also offering a limited-time trade-up programme, providing preferred pricing for laboratories upgrading from older tube reader models as they transition towards more connected, cryo-capable workflows.
