New appointment strengthens perioperative and ICU research

16 Jun, 2026

The Medical University of Graz has appointed Marcelo Gama de Abreu as Professor of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, alongside his role as head of the Division of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine 2.

Gama de Abreu brings extensive international experience in anaesthesiology, intensive care and translational research, including previous roles at Dresden University of Technology and the Cleveland Clinic in the United States.

His research focuses on improving perioperative outcomes through lung-protective ventilation strategies, mechanical ventilation-induced lung injury and the reduction of postoperative pulmonary complications. He has also led major multicentre clinical trials and contributed to AI-driven research initiatives in respiratory care.

At Graz, he plans to expand work in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and establish a dedicated outcomes research unit, with a focus on improving care for both cardiac and non-cardiac surgical patients.

He has published widely in the field and holds patents relating to ventilation technology and pulmonary monitoring systems.

Gama de Abreu said his aim is to improve perioperative morbidity and mortality through a deeper understanding of physiological mechanisms and clinical translation of research findings.
