Compact, smart and designed around the user: Introducing the Esco Airstream^® G4 biological safety cabinet

For many scientists, the biological safety cabinet is where most of the working day is spent. It is their workstation, their laboratory bench and, in many cases, their desk. With this in mind, Esco Lifesciences has developed the Airstream^® (E-Series) G4, a next-generation Class II biological safety cabinet that combines certified safety performance with intelligent touchscreen control and user-focused ergonomics. Certified to EN12469 by TÜV, the cabinet has been designed to protect not only the operator, product and environment, but also the comfort and wellbeing of the people using it every day.

At the centre of the Airstream^® G4 is Esco's new Centurion touchscreen controller, a feature designed to simplify day-to-day operation and improve user confidence. The 7-inch capacitive display presents key safety information and cabinet alarms through an easy-to-understand graphical interface, including a 3D cabinet diagram and clear guidance on corrective actions. The controller is centrally positioned and angled towards the operator for improved visibility and accessibility and even remains fully responsive when operated with wet or gloved hands, an important consideration in busy laboratory environments. QuickStart functionality further streamlines operation, enabling users to start work quickly and consistently. 

Ergonomics have been carefully considered throughout the cabinet design. A full-length stainless steel armrest and a 10° angled, frameless glass sash promote a more comfortable working posture and reduce fatigue during prolonged procedures. Bright, dimmable LED illumination provides up to 1,000 lux of lighting, reducing eye strain while giving users the flexibility to adjust brightness to their preferred working conditions. Tempered glass side panels increase visibility and create a more open workspace, helping to minimise the enclosed feeling often associated with biological safety cabinets. 

Performance and sustainability are equally important elements of the Airstream^® G4 design. The cabinet utilises energy-efficient DC ECM motor technology, delivering up to 70% energy savings compared with conventional AC motor systems while maintaining stable airflow despite fluctuations in building power supply. The advanced filtration system creates an ISO Class 3 work zone, exceeding the industry standard of ISO Class 5, and offers filter life of up to ten years, reducing both operating costs and maintenance requirements. 

Additional features, including USB data logging, Remote Modbus connectivity and antimicrobial Isocide™ coating, further enhance usability and support modern laboratory connectivity and compliance requirements.
