UK Lab Management Biosciences Conference champions sustainability in science

On 20 March 2025, the Mandolay Hotel in Guildford, Surrey, hosted the first-ever UK Lab Management Biosciences Conference, bringing together experts and industry leaders to focus on sustainability in scientific research. Organised by The Pirbright Institute and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the event provided a platform for discussions on environmentally conscious lab practices and career development in the biosciences sector.

The conference, themed ‘Sustainability in Science’, highlighted practical strategies for reducing the environmental footprint of laboratory operations. Representatives from the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) shared insights into sustainable lab initiatives, while experienced lab managers presented case studies on implementing green practices in their organisations.

Key topics covered during the event included behaviour-driven approaches to reducing carbon emissions in laboratories and professional skill development in biorisk management. The UK Institute for Technical Skills and Strategy also introduced attendees to the Technician Commitment, a national initiative supporting career progression in technical roles.

A dedicated exhibition space showcased sustainable innovations from industry leaders, including Thermo Fisher Scientific, Wasteless Bio, pHcbi, and Greiner Bio-One Ltd. Delegates explored the latest eco-friendly laboratory technologies and engaged directly with experts in the field.

The interactive format of the conference encouraged dynamic discussions and idea-sharing, with workshops and panel debates addressing the balance between innovation, efficiency, and sustainability. Attendees left with actionable takeaways, reinforcing their commitment to environmentally responsible lab management.

Olga Kotik, Laboratory Manager at The Pirbright Institute and event organiser, reflected on the overwhelming enthusiasm from participants: “The response to this inaugural conference exceeded all expectations. We were fully booked in advance, demonstrating the strong demand for collaboration on sustainable lab management. The event fostered valuable connections and generated meaningful discussions on reducing environmental impact while maintaining research excellence.”

She added: “Many attendees have shared how they’re already implementing ideas from the sessions in their own labs. With such high engagement, we’re excited to build on this momentum and establish the conference as an annual fixture in the biosciences calendar.”

To support accessibility, the conference offered travel bursaries, complimentary refreshments, and discounted accommodation options, ensuring a diverse range of participants could attend.

The success of this event underscores a growing commitment within the biosciences community to embrace sustainability while advancing scientific discovery. Plans are already underway for next year’s conference, promising further opportunities for collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
