Digital refractometer with new software and additional scales

02 Sep, 2026

KERN & SOHN adds new functions to the KERN ORL 94BS digital bench-top refractometer: The OXR-Basic software supports measurements and enables users to save and export results. The refractometer can also be equipped with up to eight individually selectable digital scales. Depending on the measurement task, the device displays the measurement results directly in the appropriate scale.

From AdBlue® to fructose

Users can choose from a wide range of scales for a variety of measurement tasks. The options include scales for AdBlue®, salinity, Oechsle, alcohol content, battery fluid and fructose. This means that the refractometer is now suitable for an even wider range of laboratory applications. KERN also retrofits the additional scales to KERN ORL 94BS units that have already been delivered.

Manage measurement data directly on your PC

KERN provides the OXR-Basic software for download free of charge. It enables measurements to be carried out, visualised and documented directly on the PC. Measurements are transmitted in real time from the refractometer and can be displayed graphically, saved and exported for further processing. Users can also define threshold values and analyse measurement data in a clear and structured manner. The refractometer is connected to the PC via USB.

Precise measurements in the laboratory

The KERN ORL 94BS (see video) measures Brix and refractive index using the principle of total internal reflection. Its wide measurement range and high measurement accuracy make it suitable for a wide variety of applications. Thanks to automatic temperature compensation (ATC), the refractometer corrects the measured value for temperature-related effects. A large display with an integrated temperature readout makes it easier to read the measurements. Calibration is quick and easy using distilled water.
