Digital lab workflows for controlled execution powered by AP Connect

While laboratory instruments have become increasingly digital, the workflows around them often remain fragmented: measurement results are stored locally on instruments, sample information must be entered several times, users are managed separately across systems, and final data often requires reformatting before transfer into a LIMS, ELN, or reporting environment.

This creates a practical gap: laboratories generate digital data but the process that creates, transfers, checks, and exports that data is not always fully connected. For routine laboratories, this can mean duplicated work, delayed data availability, and avoidable manual handling. For regulated environments, it can also complicate traceability, as teams must be able to demonstrate who performed an activity, which workflow was followed, and how the result was reviewed.

The next step in laboratory digitalisation is therefore not only collecting data, but also controlling the data flow around each measurement.

Anton Paar’s AP Connect 4.0 laboratory software extends data handling to support more controlled digital execution. Acting as a central layer between laboratory instruments and existing laboratory IT systems, it collects measurement results, metadata, and settings from connected instruments and supports review, export, and integration into downstream systems.

Four control points in a digital laboratory workflow

Anton Paar’s connected laboratory workflow can be understood through four practical control points. 

1. User identity: This is critical where several operators, instruments, and laboratories share the same digital environment. Central user management enables supported Anton Paar instruments to connect to directory services such as LDAP or Active Directory. Users, roles, and permissions can be managed more consistently, reducing the need for local user administration on individual instruments and supporting clearer attribution of measurement-related actions.

2. Task execution: Tasklists, now also available with the AP Connect Pharma Edition, allow measurement tasks to be prepared digitally and transferred to supported instruments. In supported workflows, task execution can be combined with review and approval steps, electronic signatures, and audit trail functionality, so laboratories can document the measurement process with clearer context.

3. Secure communication: Certificate-based HTTPS communication supports protected data exchange between AP Connect components and supported instruments. This supports alignment between connected laboratory workflows and IT security expectations and reduces reliance on less controlled communication paths.

4. Data handover: Many laboratories already use established LIMS import structures, CSV templates, or legacy parsing scripts. With AP Connect, configurable CSV export allows users to select available measurement information and define the order of exported fields. This can help adapt data output to existing downstream systems and reduce manual reformatting between instrument data and enterprise software.

Middleware, not another isolated system

AP Connect is not intended to replace a LIMS or ELN, but to standardise the instrument-facing workflow layer: collecting data, structuring measurement information, supporting controlled execution, and preparing data for downstream use.

For laboratories with mixed instrument environments, supported Anton Paar instruments can be connected directly, while selected third-party instruments can be integrated via the Instrument Adapter. This helps reduce data silos without forcing laboratories to redesign their entire IT landscape.

By addressing identity, task execution, secure communication, and configurable export together, AP Connect 4.0 provides a practical route from digital measurement data to controlled laboratory data flow.
