Patients enrolled on clinical trial at Leeds hospital

Jun 11 2013

More patients have been welcomed for clinical research at St James Hospital in Leeds.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has reported that a number of events will be held at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals to mark the vital work going on at hospitals in the city, with the occasion also commemorating International Clinical trials Day.

Maggie Boyke, chief executive of Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, introduced the NIHR Leeds clinical research facility in the Bexley Wing, where the delivery of experimental medicine and complex clinical trials are being looked at.

Simon Denegri, of the National Institute for Health Research, told the news provider: “Record numbers of patients are taking part in clinical studies. We want patients to know that research is happening in the NHS.

“This campaign is about getting that conversation going, and letting patients know that they don’t have to wait to be approached by their doctor or nurse. It really is OK to be proactive and ask about clinical research.”

St James’s, Leeds General Infirmary and Chapel Allerton Hospital are all hosting displays that discuss the topic of research.

Events in Leeds and the UK are promoting the NIHR (National Institute for Health Research), which is aiming to encourage patients to get involved in clinical trials.

Recent research from Cancer Research UK and Nivea Sun has indicated that roughly 14 per cent of people are more driven to gain their ideal tan as a result of the dismal weather seen across the country over the last year.

The findings showed that 44 per cent of people planning to travel abroad this summer see spending time in the sun as sufficient justification for venturing overseas.

On the other hand, a third of holidaymakers admitted that getting a tan is one of their key reasons for travelling.
