Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire has started construction on a multi-occupier hybrid building that will provide flexible space for science, technology and engineering organisations looking for 3,000 to 60,000 square feet, with a total footprint of 32,000 feet. Named the Zeus building, it will be the first in a new collection of hybrid, flexible buildings on the campus.
Zeus is a speculative development for organisations that could benefit from the facilities and expertise available across the Harwell campus. With demand for lab and research space in the UK increasing, Oxford and Cambridge are expected to need 2.5 million square feet of new laboratory and research space to accommodate current growth and this new development is already seeing interest from potential occupiers.
Mark Affonso, Head of Finance at the STFC and Director of Harwell Campus Partnership, said: “Developing thriving multi-disciplinary research and innovation campuses around our world leading national laboratories is a key strategic aim of STFC, supporting government’s ambition to increase UK R&D expenditure to 2.4 percent of GDP by 2027. The Zeus building is our latest contribution to developing high-quality accommodation for innovative science-driven businesses that will benefit from the fantastic facilities and dynamic collaborative culture of the Harwell Campus.”
Zeus is due to complete in October 2020.
