Mass spectrometry & spectroscopy
Hiden Analytical is drawing attention to the capabilities of its ECL Series, an electrochemical accessory platform developed for researchers using the HPR-40 DEMS for real-time analysis of gases and volatile species generated during electrochemical reactions. The ECL Series is designed to support both fundamental and applied electrochemistry, enabling detailed insight into reaction pathways across a wide range of research areas.
Developed as a modular family of electrochemical interfaces, including ECL-Static, ECL-Insight, and ECL-Probe, the ECL Series integrates directly with the HPR-40 DEMS while accommodating a variety of experimental configurations. This flexibility allows researchers to adapt their setup to different cell types, inlet arrangements, and sample environments without compromising measurement stability or data quality. Users can transition between static cells, direct electrode-to-mass spectrometer connections, and fully immersible probes for dissolved gas studies, all within a single analytical framework.
The platform supports both sputtered and electrodeposited working electrodes, providing researchers with the ability to assess different catalyst formats and surface treatments under consistent experimental conditions. This capability is particularly valuable for comparative studies and materials optimisation in applications such as CO₂ reduction, fuel cell characterisation, electrocatalyst development, and battery research.
Control of the ECL Series is handled through integrated software that synchronises electrochemical parameters with mass spectrometric data in real time. By aligning current, potential, and gas concentration within a single timeline, the system allows direct correlation between reaction conditions and product formation. This unified data environment simplifies interpretation and supports faster method development for both routine analysis and advanced electrochemical studies.
When combined with the HPR-40 DEMS, the ECL Series forms a fully integrated, experiment-ready solution. Hardware components, inlet options, and control software are designed to function as a cohesive workflow, helping to reduce setup time and streamline day-to-day operation in busy research laboratories.
“With the ECL Series, our aim was to bring together flexible hardware and an accessible, integrated workflow,” said Jim Melling, Senior Applications Specialist at Hiden Analytical. “By offering multiple cell options, broad electrode compatibility, and synchronised data acquisition, the system makes advanced electrochemical mass spectrometry easier to adopt in everyday research.”
