A faster, cleaner alternative to conventional laboratory ovens and furnaces

03 Aug, 2026

Conventional ovens and muffle furnaces remain everyday workhorses in laboratories, supporting applications such as ashing, loss on ignition, residue on ignition and fusion. These traditional techniques can be slow, labour-intensive and heavily reliant on manual handling, while also creating the potential for analyst exposure to unpleasant or hazardous vapours.

Microwave-enhanced furnace technology offers a modern alternative. The Milestone PYRO ashing system from Analytix is designed for the same core applications, but delivers major practical advantages over conventional systems. With a choice of three muffle types, it can reduce ashing times by up to 95%, turning procedures that once took hours into workflows completed in minutes, while still using standard crucibles and existing methodologies.

The benefits extend beyond speed. An integral exhaust system helps remove odours and fumes without releasing heat into the laboratory, improving the working environment and reducing operator exposure. Lower running costs compared with conventional furnaces add a further efficiency gain, while uniform temperature distribution across the muffle helps eliminate cold spots and supports reproducible ashing across all crucibles.
