Specialised Imaging has introduced the SIL-4 high-resolution image intensifier, designed to support demanding scientific imaging applications where rapid, low-light events must be captured with exceptional sensitivity and timing accuracy.
The SIL-4 can be synchronised with almost any high-speed camera or video system, providing flexible sensitivity, gain and resolution options through advanced microchannel plate image intensifier technology. The system enables researchers to study fast-moving phenomena across a wide range of wavelengths, from ultraviolet through to near infrared.
One area benefiting from advanced imaging technology is fusion research, where time-resolved plasma diagnostics are essential for understanding rapidly changing events such as edge-localised modes, filament formation, turbulence and radiative instabilities.
Capable of operating at framing rates of up to 1,000,000 frames per second with exposure times as short as 20 ns, the SIL-4 enables researchers to capture weak emissions from complex fusion processes. An integrated mechanical capping shutter provides additional protection for the sensitive image intensifier when not in use.
When combined with Specialised Imaging’s high-speed cameras, the SIL-4 provides nanosecond-to-microsecond exposure control, high quantum efficiency, low read noise and wide dynamic range. This allows researchers to capture weak optical, UV or X-ray emissions, including those generated using scintillator screens, while maintaining image quality without saturation.
By providing accurate spatial and temporal data, the SIL-4 supports the development and validation of fusion plasma models, helping researchers better understand plasma behaviour and improve future reactor technologies.
