Laboratory product news headlines this week include details of the PING system devised at Bar-Ilan University in Israel and California's Stanford University.

Scientists at the two academic institutions worked together on the instrument, whose full name is Protein Interaction Network Generator.

It operates by comparing the proteins made by viruses with those produced by human cells affected by the relevant disease to discover links between the two.

Learning more about the interactions between these proteins could ultimately lead to new therapies by preventing the influence of the virus on the body.

A particular reason why the PING instrument could be significant in laboratory product news could be its potential to provide new avenues for research into HIV.

Bar-Ilan University has an undergraduate cohort of almost 34,000 students from a broad range of cultural backgrounds.

It says it is the largest university in Israel, as well as being the country's fastest-growing academic institution.
