Microbiota transplantation targets Cotton Leaf Curl Disease

Researchers from the University of Glasgow and Forman Christian College University, Pakistan, are exploring an innovative approach to combat Cotton Leaf Curl Disease (CLCuD), which has severely impacted cotton production in Southeast Asia.

CLCuD has caused crop losses of up to 35%, with Pakistan’s textile industry suffering $2 billion USD in annual economic losses. Traditional methods, including chemical treatments and genetic modifications, have had limited success. Now, the research team is investigating microbiota transplantation - transferring root and leaf-associated microbiota from Gossypium arboreum, a disease-resistant cotton species, to the more vulnerable Gossypium hirsutum, used in fabric production.

The study [1], published in Communications Biology, shows that rhizospheric microbiota transplantation significantly reduces disease incidence and improves plant growth, outperforming traditional treatments.

Ayesha Badar, first author of the study, explained: "We’re exploring how plants can undergo microbiome transplants, similar to organ transplants in humans." Dr Umer Zeeshan Ijaz from the University of Glasgow added: "Advanced sequencing techniques allow us to decode microbial communities responsible for disease suppression, leading to targeted interventions."

Dr Kauser Abdulla Malik, of Forman Christian College University, highlighted that this research marks a shift from genetic engineering to utilising nature’s own defence mechanisms.

The findings hold promise for sustainable agriculture, reducing chemical pesticide use, and improving plant disease management globally. This research underscores Pakistan’s growing role in cutting-edge agricultural science.
