Digest mixed samples in a single run – Technology Report

05 Jun, 2026

Sample preparation can account for up to 80% of total analysis time, making it one of the biggest constraints on laboratory throughput. Traditionally, laboratories have had to batch similar sample types into separate acid digestion runs, reducing efficiency especially when sample numbers are low. Single reaction chamber (SRC) technology removes this limitation by enabling different sample types, weights and acid chemistries to be processed together in a single digestion run.

A Milestone Technology Report from Analytix highlights a recovery study involving certified reference materials and pharmaceutical samples. To demonstrate the flexibility of SRC technology, the study used sample weights ranging from 0.5 to 2 g and varied acid volumes across multiple vials in a single rack. The sample set was deliberately diverse to challenge the process and test the integrity of the process/results and included Lobster Hepatopancreas (TORT-3), lake sediment (BCR280R) and high-purity cellulose (Avicel) spiked with a multi-element standard in line with ICH Q3D impurity requirements.

Samples were digested using a Milestone ultraWAVE SRC system and analysed by ICP-OES. Results showed strong recoveries across all elements, with RSDs below 5% and many below 2%, demonstrating the robustness and reproducibility of SRC-based microwave digestion.
